Q | What are the most popular items on your menu? Why?
A | Most popular are the snack-inspired items like our spicy corn salsa, Asian chicken meatballs, and our Gorgonzola grapes which are juicy red grapes rolled in Gorgonzola butter then toasted with crushed almonds.
Q | Are there any items NOT on your menu that are staff favorites (that you’d be willing to serve up to any customer who asked)?
A | We provide free staff lunch every day so we make lots of fun things that aren’t on our menu! By far the thing our team begs for is burrito day. Chef will sometimes shoot them into the fryer and make chimis. And of course they have to be topped with loads of our corn salsa.
Q | You’re a catering company too?! What came first? The truck or the catering business? Did success at the first one lead to the opening of the other?
A | I started Two Caterers 17 years ago but just bought the truck in 2011. I found it on Craigslist when I was looking for some budget kitchen prep tables. It was in the Akron area which is where I’m from and I had my mom and her husband go check it out. I bought it that day over the phone! It just seemed like a great way to bring some whimsy and spontaneity back to a company that had matured over the course of the years. And the entire Two Caterers team really took it on as a collaborative project from our designer, sales people, and kitchen staff.
Q | Why is your food truck called Sweet Carrot?
A | Sweet Carrot is an anagram of Two Caterers. A friend sent an email asking if I knew that the day I bought the truck. So immediately I thought “It shall be called..SWEET CARROT!”
Q | What makes Sweet Carrot stand out from other food trucks in the area?
A | I think it’s because our food concept is so different. I’m a food truck lover (Junior’s Tacos after Pure Barre class is a must) and I wanted to create something that complimented the Columbus food truck scene rather than competed directly with a truck who was already doing a great job. So we created this griddled corn cake dish with a variety of toppings that work for carnivores and vegetarians alike. Also, we do a lot of private events where we will create new things specifically for the client or make some of our Two Caterers favorites on the truck which is different from the standard truck operator who sticks with one menu. Our festival menu features the corn cakes plus some of our catering favorites. We like to cross-pollinate ideas from company to truck and truck to company.
