Q | What are the most popular items on your menu? Why?
A | The Bahama Mama, which is a delicious smoked sausage with a unique blend of spices that is our exclusive recipe. It was recently named the iconic food of Columbus. The bratwurst and the reubens also sell like gangbusters and of course the cream puff (original vanilla) is our top selling dessert.
 
Q | Are there any items NOT on your menu that are staff favorites (that you’d be willing to serve up to any customer who asked)?
A | We have a dynamite ham salad that is not on the menu but loved by the staff. It is actually one of my sister’s absolute favorites.
 
Q | Schmidt’s is now a 5th generation family restaurant. What has changed and what has stayed the same over the last 13 decades?
A | Actually the customers have changed, as we are seeing younger families come in. Social media is prevalent, so many snap pics of the food and post even before the cream puffs arrive! What has stayed the same is our core value system. We always want to exceed the customers’ expectations; treat them the way we would want to be treated and make sure the food is the same consistent flavor they remember every time they visit.
 
Q | Man vs. Food‘s Adam Richman came to Schmidt’s! What was that experience like?
A | Phenomenal! He was in here for 9 hours filming that day. We kid that Man vs. Food is our national marketing campaign. They got so much great footage from that day that there was enough material to put into several other variations of the show such as 101 Tastiest Places to Chowdown and The Carnivore Chronicles.
 
Q | When people talk about the cream puffs, they describe them as being “as big as your head!” What else makes them so delicious?
A | It’s the love and dedication we put into every one! Seriously, I think it is the fact that the shell is light and flaky, and the filling is not your traditional heavy Bavarian cream. Ours is a vanilla pudding and whipping cream that has a much lighter consistency. It is sweet but not overly rich!
